IDA's New Year's Resolution - Save America's Wild Horses!
Dear IDA member:
If you’ve watched television or read a
newspaper the past few weeks, you couldn’t escape the news – America’s
wild horses are rapidly being
rounded up in what may be the beginning of our nation’s eradication of
wild horses. Across the West, our Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is on
a rampage, rounding up thousands of horses for an undetermined fate.
Not George Bush’s BLM, but Barack Obama’s BLM. This is not the kind of change we voted for.
IDA is the only national animal protection organization on the
scene, trying to stop the cruel round-ups of wild horses. Won’t you
please help us with a year-end tax-deductible donation today?
The horses might be packed into already-crowded holding facilities,
which have become permanent homes for over 30,000 horses. Or they might
be “relocated” to new Midwest holding facilities. Or they might go to
auction. Nobody knows, as the BLM system is already packed with tens of
thousands of wild horses who nobody wants except killer-buyers and
The only acceptable, humane solution is to leave these horses in
their natural ranges, like the 500,000-acre Calico Mountain Complex in
Nevada, where they are healthy and comfortable. You can see video of these horses here. And these ranges were provided for the horses by Congress.
This Monday, the BLM captured 74 horses in the Calico Complex, and
took them to the Fallon holding facility in Nevada. They intend to
capture 2,700 horses in this round-up alone. The agency is setting up
some capture facilities on private land from which the public will be
barred. Nobody will be able to witness the brutal helicopter stampede of the horses over treacherous winter terrain.
No one will see the BLM chase older horses, pregnant horses, and
little foals to the point of exhaustion, some will be literally run to
death. The separation of foals from their mothers, the shattering of
horse family bonds will happen behind closed doors.
Perhaps the BLM thought people like you and all of us at IDA - who
CARE about animals - would be too busy during the holidays to notice
their cruel and unecessary actions. Well how WRONG they were!
IDA is acting! Here is what we’ve done so far:
- We enlisted the support of a superb legal team at Buchanan,
Ingersoll & Rooney, wild horse specialists and campaigners, and
filed a lawsuit requesting both a preliminary and a permanent
injunction against the BLM’s Calico round-up. Last week, the federal
court judge agreed that the BLM’s policy of stockpiling tens of
thousands of horses for decades is likely illegal, and suggested that
the agency postpone the planned round-up. This makes a moratorium that
much more necessary – the BLM must stop compounding the problem it has
been creating for decades, at the expense of the horses.
- We spent funds on video documentation and flyovers to gather
evidence about the roundup. We conducted a flyover over habitat where
previous roundups happened, to use as evidence in the legal case.
- We publicized the issue, shining the world’s spotlight on the cruel
roundups. Articles mentioning IDA and our lawsuit have appeared in over
1,000 media outlets.
- Our action alerts to you, our cherished members, generated over
17,000 e-mails to President Obama and other members of his
administration. This has been one of the strongest responses we’ve ever
had to our action alerts.
- IDA has been invited by the BLM to observe one roundup, but that is
not good enough – the law allows for public observers at EVERY roundup.
Others may be distracted by the Christmas and New Year’s holidays – but not IDA! With YOUR HELP, here is how we shall continue the fight:
- We will continue flyovers of wild horse habitat to gather more evidence for our legal challenge.
- We have secured a meeting with U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s
office, and hope to convince Senator Feinstein to champion the horses’
- We are working with a coalition of wild horse rescue and protection
organizations to put pressure on the Obama administration and halt
these cruel round-ups.
- We already have demonstrations planned around the country – San
Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and near the Calico roundup site in
Nevada – with more demos on the way.
would not be possible without your continuing support. We need you. The
horses need you. Please take this final opportunity to make a 2009
We have already spent over $10,000 on this campaign, and in coming
months we will spend tens of thousands more. That’s where you come in.
If you donate through this special appeal, we promise that every penny
you send will be used directly to SAVE AMERICA’S WILD HORSES!
Thank you, and Happy New Year to you and your family.
