From Prison To Paradise
Extraordinary 2,000 Mile Journey Of Hope
For 55 Monkeys Reaches Safe Haven

Emergency Rescue Fund Tapped! Please Help Today!

Dear Friend,

One of the first calls I received as President of IDA was a desperate plea to help 55 macaque monkeys caught in a web of bureaucracy after a toxicology lab went out of business. IDA pledged to do whatever it took to free these animals from their misery and bring them to safety and peace.

Last week I told you about this emergency and our response. All 55 monkeys are now at sanctuaries in Oklahoma and Texas, beginning new lives, living as monkeys for the first time. The journey took 2 days and covered about 2,000 miles.

We were able to help these animals because you believed their lives have value.

These monkeys are safe, but we have yet to meet the expenses of this operation. This rescue, transport, and assistance we’ve provided to the sanctuaries depleted about $25,000 from our Animal Rescue Fund. So I’m asking your help today to build our Animal Rescue Fund, so we can be prepared for the next rescue.

Until last week, these 55 monkeys were imprisoned in a private New Jersey toxicology lab. We don’t know what exactly they were doing to the monkeys. We do know that the monkeys, who are 4 – 6 years old, were, according to the lab, being held in individual housing, isolated from each other. Some enclosures even faced the wall at one point, so they couldn’t even see other monkeys – just one of numerous violations of the Animal Welfare Act cited by the USDA that attest to the anguish these monkeys endured in the lab, including psychological suffering so severe that some were pulling hair out from their chest, shoulders and forearms.

Now they will have a life filled with fresh air, friends, and freedom from harm.

I wish you had been there with me to witness the monkeys experiencing the outside world for the first time. Upon entering their new habitats they brushed their hands through the green grass, the wind blowing through their fur, and they stared up into the sun, taking in the immense blue sky for the first time. They had been held in cruel solitary confinement, deprived of crucial relationships with their own species. This sad existence is now behind them. They are beginning to bond with one another and form the intimate, complex relationships that come naturally to these social animals.

Lifesaving rescues like this can be sudden and costly. So far this mission has cost more than $25,000.  We had to dig deep into our Animal Rescue Fund to get the job done.

I am counting on your support today to help us replenish our Animal Rescue Fund so we can react just as quickly to rescue more animals from barren lives in merciless laboratories, puppy mills, zoos and circuses, and in the wake of devastating natural disasters.

With your generosity and our determination I believe that we can free an unprecedented number of animals from misery and exploitation.

Please, be as generous as you are able today.

On behalf of all the animals who benefit from your compassion, thank you.
