Help Victims Of Floods And Mudslides In Brazil

Your donation to IDA's Animal Disaster Relief Fund will help us continue to respond to this and other disasters

IDA volunteer Carlos with dog rescued in BrazilWith thirty years combined animal disaster relief experience, In Defense of Animals (IDA) and Kinship Circle have formed a partnership to respond to Brazil’s floods and mudslides. An IDA-Kinship Circle team in Brazil is providing search and rescue services, veterinary treatment, including spaying and neutering, and other needed assistance. The goal, as in the aftermath of the 2010 Chile earthquake and tsunami, is to work within the structure of Brazilian agencies and bring together human, technical, and material resources.

Entire towns are devoured by floods and mudslides, the worst natural disaster in the country’s history. Thousands of rescued animals have found refuge in makeshift shelters in gymnasiums and warehouses across the country. Residents who are able are also providing shelter. One woman who lost almost everything is caring for 80 animals, a man whose home was washed away is tending to over 100, a woman who is grieving the loss of five of her animals transported 700 to her rural property, some of whom have already been adopted.

In the darkest of places, where the landscape is now stripped of mountains, buildings, roads, and bridges, there is dire need for food, water, shelter, and veterinary-trained responders. In the most devastated areas, animals with broken bones, burns, and deep gashes are everywhere. There is growing concern about disease.

IDA-Kinship CircleNicky, a German Shepherd mix, limped weakly into the Teresopolis shelter, in Rio de Janeiro, wearing a collar caked in mud. Quiet, sad and thin, with one leg dangling, a missing toe, and an absent foot pad, Nicky appeared paralyzed with shock. It was soon learned that her family was swallowed up in a landslide. IDA-Kinship Circle responders Jan and Carlos Cabral of Posse Petropolis, Brazil adopted the crippled ten-year-old dog, who now shadows Jan everywhere so as not to be left behind.

In an old warehouse in Teresopolis, a mountain town outside Rio de Janeiro, newly rescued animals join others displaced by the floods. There is overcrowding and shortages of medication and fluids. Temperatures rise into the nineties. Dogs are splashed with cold water but the risk of dehydration is ever-present. A dog arrives at the shelter, his tail so thick with maggots that it falls off during treatment. There are burn victims and others infested with maggots. Many former companion animals are now orphans or are abandoned because their Dogs tail lost to maggotsfamilies are at emergency shelters that don't allow animals. Not-yet-rescued cats hide in the ruins. Puppies remain stuck in the wreckage. Horses, some submerged into the water up to their necks, are still waiting to be saved. Homeless animals of all species wander in the rubble.

We can’t forget these animals. Your contribution will help bring happy endings.

IDA, along with our partners at Kinship Circle, have been asked to help set up a spay/neuter clinic and  adoption, education, and vaccination drives for mudslide survivors. The plan is to rotate animals from the street to the shelter to spay/neuter and vaccinate, then place them in new homes, so more orphaned animals can be helped.

Your contribution will allow us to send more volunteers and veterinary-trained responders throughout the region as quickly as possible. Funds are greatly needed to support the rescue, first aid, medical attention, and emergency housing for thousands of the lost, sick, and wounded.
