Hurricane Sandy and other disasters
In Defense of Animals has played a vital role in relief efforts following many natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the earthquakes of Haiti and Chile in 2010, the 2011 floods in Australia and Brazil, and, most recently, the Mississippi River flood of 2011.
And now, Hurricane Sandy clobbers one of the most heavily inhabited areas of the United States.
IDA acted immediately. Your donations to IDA's Animal Disaster Relief Fund allowed us to contribute to a team of volunteers to help with cleanup, animal care, and reuniting lost companion animals with their guardians.
IDA donations are providing cat and dog food, cat litter, shelter, and medicines to animals in need in one of the hardest hit areas of New Jersey.
And IDA donations are helping feral and homeless cats on Long Island in New York.
We are grateful for the outpouring of support from our members, but there is still much to be done. We are still receiving requests for assistance from rescue organizations in the impacted areas. Hurricane Sandy was worse than anticipated and the work of rescuing, providing assistance, caring for, and reuniting animals with their guardians will continue for many months to come.
