Spotlight on Hope Honorees: Clarissa and Sarah Peterson

Clarissa was diagnosed May 22, 2010, about 3 weeks before her fourth birthday, while living in Champaign, Illinois. When she was 5 years old, she moved to Boston, and at that time she became a patient of Dr. Michelle Katz at Joslin. She is currently a 5th grader at Chenery Middle School. She plays the flute, and is a member of the Courtyard Club. Clarissa is an avid reader, loves adding books to her collection and visiting the library. She enjoys playing with her siblings and especially loves to take care of her baby brother.

Sarah was diagnosed on January 19, 2014, nearly 4 years after her sister, Clarissa, and just two weeks after her third birthday. Sarah is a kindergartner at Wellington Elementary. She is excited to learn how to read and loves helping her teacher in the classroom. Sarah started soccer this fall and loves playing with her team. She loves to play outside, go to the park, ride her bike and color.

Clarissa was happy when Sarah was diagnosed and the two of them created a diabetes buddies club. Even though diabetes is hard, they are happy to have each other to help them through the tough times. Both Clarissa and Sarah enjoy being involved with raising money for diabetes research. They have held bake sales and participated in JDRF’s “OneWalk” to cure diabetes.

In addition, Clarissa and Sarah have enjoyed participating in the research at Joslin Diabetes Center by participating in a number of research studies and trials.
