Roger Revelle: Statesman of Science VHS
Dr. Roger Revelle has been called "one of the last true heroes" America has known. Firmly believing one cannot divorce the sciences from the human element, he devoted much of his life to the issues of world hunger, education and racism. Locally, he is considered the "father" of the University of California at San Diego, and his scientific achievements put UCSD's Scripps Institute of Oceanography on the map. The illustrious career and private life of this complex and humane man is examined in Roger Revelle: Statesman of Science. Historical footage featured in the program illustrates Revelle's many accomplishments. Included are scenes from oceanographic expeditions in 1957, the Greenhouse monitoring station at Mauna Loa, Hawaii and the UCSD groundbreaking dedication. The film also includes numerous interviews with those close to Revelle, including Vice President-elect Al Gore; Stewart Udall, former Secretary of the Interior; Clark Kerr, past president of the University of California; Ellen Revelle, the late educator's wife; and colleagues Charles Keeling and Walter Munk.
