Refugees Around The World Need Your Voice TODAY!

You may have seen reports that the Administration may unveil a refugee admissions target of less than 50,000—the lowest in our country’s history—for the coming fiscal year, which begins in October. We are more committed than ever to welcoming the stranger and strongly urge the Administration to allow communities around the country to offer protection and safety to at least 75,000 refugees next year. Faced with the worst displacement crisis in history, we know we can do more.

Now, more than ever before, is the time to voice our concern and speak out in support of refugees. It is critical that the White House and your Congressional representatives hear from you today. Please take a few minutes and tell your elected officials to support a strong refugee admissions program in the new fiscal year.

You can use this as a sample message to give during your call:

I am your constituent from [City, State] and I strongly support refugee resettlement and am outraged by reports that President Trump may set the refugee admissions goal for next year at less than 50,000 – the lowest goal in modern history. I urge [name of member] to tell the Administration that they support offering safety and protection to at least 75,000 refugees in FY 2018. As we face the worst global refugee crisis in history, with more than 22.5 million refugees half of whom are children, resettlement of a small percent of those in need strengthens our national security, encourages other countries to keep their doors open to refugees and asylees, and advances U.S. foreign policy interests. I call on you to protect the U.S. refugee admissions program.”

Tweet at President Trump and your Senators & Representatives: “.@realDonaldTrump and @[YOUR Senators/Representative] 50k refugees is inexcusable - would be the lowest refugee goal EVER. Stop dismantling refugee resettlement. #RefugeesWelcome #GreaterAs1”

And, of course, feel free to add in your own words as you advocate for this important work!

In addition to calling your representatives, consider taking one or more of these suggested actions to magnify your support refugees:

- Share a personal story about why refugee resettlement is important to you, your community, or your congregation.

- Support LIRS in our advocacy and our life-saving refugee resettlement and children’s services work around the nation.
