Protect Vulnerable Children from Harm

Dear [Decision Maker],

As your constituent and a person of faith, I am deeply concerned that this Congress and the Trump Administration will take actions that will prevent critical protections for unaccompanied children fleeing to the United States to escape endemic violence in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. My faith teaches me that vulnerable children should be received with compassion and protected from harm.

The story of Maria, a child from Central America, illustrates the importance of maintaining these protections. Maria was twelve years old when she was kidnapped at gunpoint and taken to a home where she was held captive. She was beaten and raped on an almost daily basis and eventually forced into prostitution. Because of this she became pregnant and gave birth to a girl while captive. Maria fled with her child, riding on top of trains so that they might escape the sexual bondage. Upon arriving in the United States, Maria ended up qualifying for a T-visa and is currently doing well. She was even able to graduate from high school. While Maria successfully made it through the Central America Minor program (CAM), many children have been murdered while waiting to be processed.

As more children seek refuge in the United States, it is vital that we keep our commitment to protection and due process. I urge you to uphold the bipartisan commitment to protecting vulnerable children who are fleeing trafficking and other persecution established in the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) of 2008.

I ask you to stand with people of faith, and stand against harmful proposals that place vulnerable children at risk. Please work to ensure that children, like Maria, are protected rather than exposed to harm.

Sincerely,
