Fully Fund Afterschool Programs!

Dear [Decision Maker],

As Congress begins to work on funding for fiscal year 2025, it is critical that youth development programs have the support they need. Local afterschool and summer learning programs leverage federal funding to keep young people safe and healthy, inspire them to learn, and give working parents peace of mind. When you invest in afterschool and summer learning programs you are strengthening children, families, communities, and the economy. These investments help to lower the demand for programs that connect young people with key opportunities and skills needed to be successful in school and in life.

Moving forward we ask the following in order to support students and families in Illinois:

-Provide $8.5 billion, an increase of $500 million over the FY 2023 level, for the Child Care Development Block Grant (CCDBG).

-Support at least $2.09 billion for the Department of Education's 21st Century Community Learning Centers  (21st CCLC) grant program in the FY 2025 Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill.

-Allocate $200 million to Full-Service Community Schools, which is an increase of $50 million over the FY 2023 enacted funding level. This funding will help to provide comprehensive services that meet the holistic needs of children, families, and communities.

As you consider these line items, we hope you will consider the Afterschool for Children and Teens Now Coalition (ACT Now) as your statewide afterschool resource.  ACT Now wants to connect you with afterschool, summer learning programs, and/or community schools in your district to see firsthand the critical roles that these programs play for our children, youth, and families in our state. ACT Now can also provide you with any additional research on supply and demand and evidence of the effectiveness of expanded learning programs in Illinois.
