I am Perry Zimmerman and I currently have cancer for the fourth time. Because of genetic bilateral retinoblastoma, I have a second osteosarcoma, this time in my scapula. My family has been participating in Cycle for Survival for 10 years in order to find a cure for rare cancers like the ones that have affected me and affect many others. Cycle for Survival event days are some of my favorite days of the year, and some may argue they are better than Christmas. What can beat a whole day of singing at the top of your lungs, dancing like a crazy person, and sweating on a spin bike for a great cause?
At my very first Cycle for Survival event I met Jennifer Goodman Linn, the founder of Cycle. She never questioned why it was her in the hospital beds with chemo dripping into her veins. She never let feeling sick stop her from getting on the bike every day. What she did do was ask what she could do to give back.
When I was diagnosed with cancer again right after Thanksgiving, it again felt like my world was falling apart. However, I knew I was going to be getting treated by the same team that treated me in 2011 and that they are skilled and educated and ready to help.
Getting diagnosed with cancer is obviously difficult, but Cycle for Survival provides hope that one day cancer won't even be an issue. I am so proud to be a part of such a great movement, and I hope you consider making a donation to help me and others beat cancer.
