Third time's a charm! Okay, I know what you're thinking... "AGAIN?!" Although I enjoyed the process much more last year than I did the first time around, as a former Division I swimmer I am fairly certain that I would still prefer to swim 26.2 miles than run it. Having said that, this year I will once again be diving head first into the NYC Marathon- because I can. Each one of my miles trained leading up to November as well as each of the 26.2 on race day will be in honor and memory of those who can't.
Over the past two and a half years, MSK has taken on a whole new meaning to my family, and will forever hold a special place in our hearts. My family's world was rocked in March 2023 when my dad was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. To no one's surprise, he tackled and continues to tackle his diagnosis with dignity and grace (and with as little attention drawn to himself as possible), just like he has tackled every other obstacle that life has ever thrown his way. We spent most of 2023 at various MSK locations in Westchester and NYC for doctor's appointments, bloodwork, and seven rounds of chemo leading up to major surgery. This past November, we were devastated to learn that dad's cancer was back but were comforted knowing we would be tackling our second course of treatment with the same incredible care team in our corner.
We are so eternally grateful for his MSK team for everything they have done and continue to do for our family, from the extraordinary care he's received to the welcoming smiles and compassion they've shown each time we have walked through the doors. Although life might look a little different these days, we are doing our best to stay positive and celebrate the little wins along the way.
It's no secret that cancer is a disease that has affected and continues to affect far too many of our loved ones, but it is my hope that one day in the near future we will finally find a cure for this terrible disease. This year, I am honored to say I will once again be running and raising money for Fred's Team to advance innovative cancer research at MSK.
Last year, it was an honor to run and raise money for dad's incredible surgeon, Dr. Daniela Molena, and her team. This year, I am especially proud to say that I have arranged for every dollar I raise to be donated directly to my dad's incredible oncologist, Dr. Samuel Cytryn, to help fund his research and various clinical trials.
