Michael Verdello
My father finished the New York City Marathon in 1990. I'll always remember the photo of him triumphantly holding his arms up at the finish line, exhausted, smiling (as strongly as can be expected after 26.2 miles) with the back of his shirt reading "MY FIRST AND LAST".
Three years later, he finished it again.
Dad was diagnosed with Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) in 2017. I am forever grateful to Dr. Nash and his team at MSK for the life extending surgeries they were able to perform. They gave us the gift of time. Time that I needed with him during a critical phase of growth in my life as I finished college and started my career.
My dad's battle with cancer, his third marathon, finished in May of 2023. I have started running since then as a way to feel connected to him and to challenge myself like he always encouraged me to do. That July, I ran my first 10K in over 10 years and later finished my first ever Half-Marathon in November.
In July 2024, I injured my knee while training and that led me to use my deferral to push my race to 2025. While I was devastated at the time, I like to think of it as my Dad exerting some influence on me to reprioritize life goals, like starting the MBA he always wanted me to pursue.
This November, I follow his footsteps through the streets of New York City. I'm running for my father, for myself, and for all of those battling cancer and their families.
I’m taking on the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon with Fred’s Team, the official running program of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). My goal is to raise as much as I can to support groundbreaking rare cancer research at MSK, and your donation will give me a boost as I train for my race.
100% of Your Donation Supports Research
Named in honor of New York City Marathon co-founder and MSK patient Fred Lebow, Fred’s Team brings together passionate runners and supporters to lead the way against cancer. 100% of the funds I raise will go directly into MSK labs, where doctors and scientists have expertise in more than 400 types of cancer and work every day to find new cures.
Donate Today!
When you make a gift to Fred’s Team, you help MSK researchers develop better treatment options for the people who need them most. Together, we can make a big difference.
Thank you for your generosity!
