Garrett Nash
My patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center inspire me to go to work every day. Each morning, these patients wake up to undergo treatment for colorectal cancer, appendix cancer, mesothelioma and other rare malignancies, or face life with the specter of recurrence not far from their minds. That inspiration carries over to all parts of my life, including my running.
Cancer is not just part of my professional life. My own mother, in addition to other family members and friends, has been touched by cancer. Running a marathon seems like a small effort compared to what I see them and my patients go through.
My first marathon for Fred's Team was in 2010. I was asked to run that marathon in memory of a young woman who passed away more than twenty years ago while she was training for the NYC Marathon. While I was training, I read her running journal—it was filled with her hopes, dreams and struggles. Tragically, her journal entries ended suddenly before she could finish her training and run the marathon.
While I am running, I often think of what she wrote and how lucky I am to have this opportunity, and hope that, by running with Fred’s Team, I can help give others a similar chance.
I hope that my oncology training and experience can make a positive impact in my patients' lives, but I have no illusions—there is much that we do not know about the biology and optimal treatment of cancer. That is why half of my time is spent conducting research. Knowing the deep need for cancer research funding, since 2010 I have completed ten NYC Marathons and five Half-Marathons for Fred's Team and my team has raised over $300,000 to support cancer research at MSK.
All donations will be used to support our efforts to better understand and treat metastatic cancer to the peritoneum, a type of cancer spread that has been very challenging to control. With your support, we have the opportunity to make a major impact in this group of diseases.
Running in the NYC Marathon has been a lifetime highlight for me, and though I injured my knee in June, I will continue to fundraise for this inspirational cause even if I cannot run in November and I'll be running again in 2025!
All the best,
Dr. Garrett Nash
