Lauren Kushner
In September 1989, I started work in the Department of Pediatrics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. I often heard that the smallest interaction can make the biggest difference in your life. For me, that is certainly true! My patients have made that difference for me.
I originally came to MSKCC when my friend David was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Although David did not survive, his death inspired me to make a difference. At his funeral, I met his pediatric nurse, and that meeting changed my life. In November, I will have worked in pediatrics for 30 years, with one short break. Through the years I have met quite a number of inspirational children. I have been part of some unbelievable patient successes and experienced sad and tragic losses as well. When people ask me how I can work with young cancer patients I reply in all honesty that my patients help me to be the person that I am today.
When I returned to Memorial now 20 years ago, I felt like I was coming home. I remember the day that I walked back into the Pediatric Day Hospital. Everyone from the man who stocks the shelves to the attending doctors greeted me and welcomed me back. The hospital is a place where I feel at home and I am grateful to truly love what I do.
My patients continue to inspire me and show me what fortitude is all about. To honor their courage, I am running with Fred's Team in the New York City Marathon to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. I consider myself fortunate to be able to work with doctors at the forefront of pioneering research, providing new and better treatments for children with cancer. I have witnessed firsthand the difference that their research can make. We often tell patients that each day is like running a marathon. This November Iwill be running the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon with Fred’s Team, the official running program of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). My goal is to raise as much as I can to support groundbreaking pediatriccancer research at MSK, and your donation will give me a boost as I run for them!
