TEAM HELENE! Running for brain cancer research

In fall of 2014, Marlene's mom, Helene, was diagnosed with glioblastoma. She died about four months later, at only 50 years old. This disease is aggressive and cruel, and treatment options are still few and without improvements in recent years, despite it being a more common form of brain cancer. It's a nasty disease that is incredibly hard to treat, and more research is needed to change outcomes and give family's more time with their loved ones.

Over the last year we have found running to be a source of joy and inspiration (and a sort of therapy!). After challenging ourselves to run half marathons this past year, it feels fitting to take on this big goal of finishing our first marathon in honor of mom. During Helene’s brief illness we attended meets to cheer on my sister, Kate, who was a collegiate runner at the time, and sent photos and videos to my mom. I wish she could see us run for her now, and it's an honor to run for her in this milestone year in our grief timeline.
