About the Michael Delaney Do the Right Thing Fund
We have created this page to raise funds for early detection lung cancer research at Memorial Sloan Kettering in honor of our dad, Michael Delaney - beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, boss, mentor and friend.
Our dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in late August 2014. We sat together on the back porch, the scene of many a summer meal and great memories at our home, as he told us about his devastating diagnosis. His diagnosis came as a shock for many reasons, but especially since Dad went to the doctor regularly and was vigilant about undergoing routine preventative care screenings. Life for our family changed dramatically after Labor Day. With the odds against him, Dad fought valiantly for his life everyday, never crying or showing how much he hurt. As a family, we did everything we could to support him and we left no stone unturned in the search for the best treatment options available. Despite our efforts and the efforts of the amazingly talented team at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, our father lost his battle to cancer only 4 months later. He was 61 years old.
While our family’s story is personal, it is sadly not uncommon. For most lung cancer patients like our dad, the disease is discovered too late, surpassing the window of time when treatment is most effective. Patients are left with limited options and often a grim prognosis. With your help, we are funding lifesaving research focused on detecting and battling lung cancer. Having seen firsthand the expertise, determination and compassion of the Memorial Sloan Kettering doctors, nurses and staff we feel confident that major breakthroughs are possible.
Our dad was a one-of-a-kind guy with a big heart. We always say he was the smartest guy in the room and the funniest guy in the room. He was humble and kind to boot. Above all, he was always committed to doing the right thing. Please consider making a donation to help us do the right thing by him. Together we can continue his legacy.
Thank you.
Hallie, Luke and Ryan Delaney
