There are certain days that have been indelibly etched in my mind...the days each of my daughters were born, the day I lost my mother and the day that my daughter was diagnosed with cancer.
In January, my 9 year old spitfire of a daughter, Bailey, was diagnosed with a rare and relentless mutation of rhabdomyosarcoma. Over the course of a few whirlwind weeks, we have traded driving to and from soccer tournaments and standing on the sidelines cheering her on, in exchange for hours in the hospital and the Head Coaching job in the biggest game of all – the fight for her life.
So why do I ride? I ride for the obvious-- raising money in hopes of finally finding the cure that beats this awful disease once and for all.
But why do I really ride?
I ride for the child who's had her innocence ripped away with needles, ports, biopsies, scans and doctor visits. The child that can't run or tackle her friends for fear of the pain from the tumor in her leg or the port in her chest. The child that is afraid of facing the world looking different with her new haircut. The child whose body is riddled with cancer and whose mind is riddled with fear.
I ride for all the parents who wish every second of every day that they could switch places with their child. I ride for the brothers and sisters who don't quite understand what is happening to their family and are undergoing their own trials. I ride for the grandparents, the aunts, the uncles and cousins who have picked up arms in this battle. I ride for everyone who has shown up to walk this journey with us…the friends who’ve been there for everything. You are all a part of our family, the family we get to pick. And cancer picked the wrong family to mess with.
But more than anything, I ride for Bailey, who has the heart of a lion and a smile that radiates from coast to coast. To know Bailey, is to love Bailey. She's funny, she's mischievous, she's smart and she's just a kid who wants to be back with her friends.
Bailey is MY daughter and we don't give up. We stand up and we fight. While her journey is going to be long, she's ready for battle. As Bailey has said during the tougher bouts, "I can. And I will."
Cancer be damned. We can. We Will. Let's beat this!
