Kid's Shouldn't Have to be Warriors
In January 2023, my almost 9 year old daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 rhabdomyosarcoma. As if stage 4 wasn't bad enough, she had a rare mutation of rhabdo, so rare that there are only 35 cases a year. A veritable death sentence. We heard the words that no parents should ever hear. And then we went through what no parent should ever have to do. We said goodbye. After a year of giving it her all, my brave little girl courageously fought her last battle 8 months ago. She was 1 month shy of her 10th birthday.
In the last year of her life, Bailey's name took on a whole new meaning. It became Bailey the Brave. It is the inspiration for Baileys Warriors, an army of folks near and far that stood shoulder to shoulder, refused to back down and rallied behind her fight. Bailey's Warriors was and is a common sight on yard signs, hats, sweatshirts, cars and team jerseys throughout her beloved hometown of Chatham, New Jersey. Bailey’s name extended even farther when it became the battle cry for the Cycle for Survival team created in her honor, which raised more than one million dollars for rare cancer research last year—the first team in Cycle for Survival’s 17-year history to do so in a single season.
Bailey defied the odds and lasted much longer than doctors originally anticipated. We watched as our daughter went through hell. She was funny, brave, athletic, had a heart of pure gold and at the same time, she was stubborn as a mule. She was tough as nails, even when she was terrified of the road that lay ahead. She never backed down and she always, always, held her ground. She would do it her way. Chemotherapy, radiation, trials, surgeries, countless needle pokes...all done her way. Yet by the end of whatever arduous trial she had to endure, she could still smile and light up a room. She had that unique ability to waltz in, flash her megawatt smile and immediately put everyone at ease. She lived fiercely, she laughed fiercely and man, did she love her people fiercely. People will never forget how she made them feel.
Last year we took to our bikes as a way to fight for Bailey. Our Cycle for Survival Ride shattered all the record books and showed Bailey what an incredible army she had fighting alongside her. We dared to defy the odds and look at what we did. We are the ONLY team in Cycle for Survival’s 17 year history to raise over $1mm in a single season!!! And we did it TWICE.
Bailey was so proud of our Cycle for Survival achievement and being atop the leaderboard. She thought of every donation, every dollar as an arrow. An arrow that she could shoot at her enemy. She loved being at the head of an army and the thought of leading an army that could wipe out cancer. She hated cancer to her very core.
While Bailey fought her last battle courageously on January 20th, my war has just begun. There are other children out there who cannot have their life cut short by this terrible disease. Our battleground is the fundraising field. Every donation is another arrow in our quiver. We filled Bailey's quiver with over 2mm arrows and we will fire off those arrows and make it rain hell on cancer. While we are utterly devastated, we will never stop fighting. We are Bailey's Warriors and we won't stop.
Memorial Sloan Kettering through Cycle for Survival has given us the ability to fight back. So now, I ride. I fight. I ride for Bailey, my little warrior who never gave up. I ride to keep her smile, her spark, her legend alive. To know Bailey, was to love Bailey. She had the heart of a lion and her smile radiated from coast to coast.

Thank you to all who have joined our army and fought alongside us. Thank you for opening your hearts and your wallets. The money we have raised will fund the therapies, the trials and eventually, the cures. We all ride to bring the storm so that someday, parents won't have to stand on a stage and give their children's eulogies. So that someday, the Storm will stand on a stage and give cancer its own eulogy. We may be outnumbered but my god, we will never be outgunned.
So now we ride. We ride in defiance. We ride for Bailey.
