reliance building cardReliance Building Postcard--Build Your Own Chicago

The Reliance Building is an early experiment in Chicago skyscraper engineering. Newly-invented steel skeleton construction allowed the building to be completed in two stages. The granite-faced lower floors were built in 1891 by John Wellborn Root to fit underneath the still-occupied upper floors of an existing masonry structure on the site. In 1894, the floors of the previous building were torn down and Daniel Burnham's elegant, airy terracotta and plate-glass tower was constructed on top of the 1891 base. This card includes all pieces and instructions necessary to make a complete paper model at 1:2000 scale, approx. 2.5" tall. All the cards in the Build Your Own Chicago series are mailable postcards, with space on the reverse for a stamp and address and a message. Each card also includes a short but informative description of the landmark the model represents. Instructions are included in the form of multi-lingual isometric diagrams. There is also a Build Your Own New York series.
