Marathon 2014 Masthead

Keegan Garnsey
Mansfield, Massachusetts

Keegan's pace in the 2013 Boston Marathon® would have put her near the finish line and the site of the first explosion—had she not stopped to talk with some friends. Like many others she wasn't sure if she'd run this year.

Despite growing up in Colorado, the New England Aquarium made a lasting impression on me starting when I was just 5 years old and visited for the first time. After moving to the East Coast to attend Boston College in 2004, I became adamant about becoming involved with one of their amazing programs.

Dreams were made a reality in 2008 when I joined the Aquarium as a volunteer with the penguin colony.  More than five years later, I have gained a great appreciation for the educational experiences that are available to younger generations in diverse communities every year. I can only hope that the Aquarium will have the same impression on these children that it did on me so many years ago.

Although all of these experiences with the Aquarium are important to me, my most significant experience came after joining the 2013 New England Aquarium Boston Marathon Team. Here I met the most amazing group of people and became a part of something truly unique and special. Months of training, group get-togethers and countless jokes and posts were just the start of the bond that was created between teammates and coaches. Little did I know, these people would become so much more after the tragic events on April 15, 2013.

Because I did not finish last year’s marathon, I was fortunate enough to be invited back by the B.A.A. for the 2014 marathon. Regardless, I cannot imagine finishing on April 21 without the team that got me there in 2013, and I am honored to be representing the New England Aquarium again.

Long distance runner Kara Goucher once said, “That’s the thing about running: your greatest runs are rarely measured by racing success. They are moments in time when running allows you to see how wonderful your life is.”

Please join me in support of this amazing organization!

Thank you!
