To everyone who participated in our in-person and virtual stair climbs! Fundraising is still open until Sunday 9/19. Any funds you raise before then will count to your fundraising goal of $150 to receive the finisher medal/shirt/bib. And if you raise $350 you also get a hat; $750 you also get a hoodie.

If you missed out this year, don't worry! We hold this event every year around 9/11 to honor fallen first responders, and to provided needed support to all first responders across the country. 

You can still donate to the event by searching for a person or team or company (on the top left of this page) and donate to someone's campaign so they can receive the fundraising award prizes.

All funds received will count towards our $200,000 event goal.

The National First Responders Stair Climb was started in San Francisco in 2017 to raise awareness and bring support to First Responders who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Injuries (PTSI).

We hold a fundraising Climb each year around the time of 9/11 in remembrance of those that gave their lives that day, as well as those firefighters, police, EMS and dispatchers whose lives are forever affected by daily exposure to traumatic events.

September 11, 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. We want to take this historic occasion to remember our 412 fallen first responders who lost their lives as a result of that tragic event.

The money raised is used for the administration of the fund and the payment for first responders to attend PTSI programs.

ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED. Limited on-site registrations will be available on Sunday 9/11 (based on a space-available basis).

Registration for the in-person climb is $60.00 (non-refundable). All climbers will also be required to raise a minimum of $150 to be able to participate in the climb (you will be given the opportunity to pay the remaining balance onsite on race day if you have not met your fundraising goal). 

Finishers will receive a gift bag, medal and finisher t-shirt. Participants will also be eligible to win other fundraising prizes such as a hat and hoodie. See FAQs for more information.

Course Description

Location: 555 California St, San Francisco. Interior stairwell, ground floor to 52nd floor.
Date: Saturday, September 11, 2021
Length: 1197 Stairs to the 52nd Floor
Description: We are working closely with the City of San Francisco to determine what this climb will look like (how much time/distance required between climbers, if we can have massage and food in the plaza, etc). Most likely we will ask all climbers to present proof of vaccination, or of a negative Covid test 48-72 hours before event. We will have more information as the event gets closer and we receive guidance from the Department of Public Health on current regulations as they stand in September.

Your $60 in-person registration fee is non-refundable. This fee goes to cover event-production expenses including permits, tenting, etc. If the event happens as planned but you cannot or do not wish to attend the event for any reason (have other plans, injury, health concerns, family emergency) you will forfeit your registration fee. Registration fees for participants who cancel voluntarily cannot be transferred to the 2022 event. Any funds raised toward your $150 goal can be applied towards a virtual climb award for 2021.

If the event is canceled by the NFRF or by the City/County/State due to Covid or any other concerns, we will apply your registration fee to the 2022 in-person climb. Or we can change your registration to a virtual climber and apply your registration fee towards your 2021 fundraising goal. Contact us at for more details.

Important Participation update (as of 8/15/21):
We are requiring all participants, volunteers, staff, and to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours before the event. 

All participants, volunteers, and staff will also be required to wear a mask at all times (we will have some on hand if you don’t have one). This includes wearing the mask during the climb (First Responders in fully-enclosed gear with air tank will be allowed to forgo the mask), and in th eplaza when interactivg with staff and volunteers.

This is the current requirement set by the production team to keep our participants, staff and volunteers safe and comfortable.

We will continue to monitor the situation and will update if this plan changes.

Can't make it to San Francisco on September 11? You can still pariticpate in our “virtual climb”!

  • You will have 10 days (Friday September 3rd to Sunday September 12th) to complete your “climb activity” and send us the results (more instructions on that will follow prior to the start of the event on 9/3/21).
  • We will provide you with a link to upload your climb stats and send us a screenshot of your activity.
  • For the virtual “climb” you have the choice of a number of different activities, not just stair climbing

Registration for the virtual climb is free. All climbers must raise a minimum of $150 to receive their climb t-shirt, race bib and finisher medal (which will be mailed to you after fundraising closes on 9/19/21).
