NIX OHIO ANTI-ABORTION AMENDMENT TO HB493

keep_abortion_legal_200x200

We must act now to stop Ohio Governor John Kasich from signing the anti-abortion amendment to HB493, the most extreme abortion restriction in the country, into law. Under this amendment, if a provider detects a heartbeat and performs an abortion, they may face imprisonment for one year. This is unconstitutional and wrong.

Please join us in urging Governor Kasich to veto this piece of legislation.

Nix Anti-Abortion Amendment to HB493

Dear Governor Kasich,

On Tuesday night, the Ohio legislature passed a dangerous amendment, to an unrelated child abuse measure, that would ban abortion as soon as a fetal "heartbeat" is detected, which can be near six weeks after conception. This is unfathomable. Most people do not even know that they are pregnant six weeks after conception.

This measure does not protect women's health. Quite the opposite, if this measure is signed into law, many of us, cisgender women, transgender men, intersex, gender nonconforming people, will effectually be stripped of the right to abortion, even in the most dire of circumstances. This is unconstitutional. Further, this measure directly attacks abortion providers for providing a medically sound service. If a provider detects a heartbeat and performs an abortion, they may face imprisonment for one year. Please do not pass such an extreme TRAP (targeted regulation of abortion providers) bill into law.

This abortion ban only has an exception for the life endangerment of the pregnant person. It does not include an exception for rape or incest. You have been firm in your stance that anti-abortion provisions must include exceptions for rape and incest. This bill is overly restrictive and harmful to the health and wellbeing of the people of Ohio.

I urge you to veto the anti-abortion heartbeat amendment to HB493.

Sincerely,
