Support the Equality Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am urging you to co-sponsor the Equality Act, introduced today by Senator Jeff Merkley in the U.S. Senate and Rep. Cicilline in the U.S. House of Representatives, along with co-sponsors Senators Tammy Baldwin and Cory Booker, and Representatives Nancy Pelosi and John Lewis.

With your support, the Equality Act would provide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer(LGBTQ) people comprehensive non-discrimination protections in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, public funding, credit and education.

According to a recent poll from Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, 69% of voters support a federal LGBTQ non-discrimination law--however a strong and explicit federal law is not in place to protect LGBTQ people against discrimination. In fact, in 28 states, a woman can marry her wife on Friday and be fired from work for being a lesbian or bisexual on Monday. And in 31 states, someone can be fired simply for being transgender.

Right now, depending on what state you live in, our country does not provide equal access to the promise of America for LGBTQ people. Congress can change that. That is why I am urging you to co-sponsor the Equality Act so everyone can have a fairer chance at accessing basic needs including housing, safe schools and employment.

Sincerely,
