Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) will introduce an amendment to the Senate health care reform bill that would establish national centers of excellence for the treatment of depression and bipolar disorders.
The amendment, which is based on legislation introduced in October (The ENHANCED Act), would enhance the coordination and integration of physical and mental health care as well as incorporating community-based social services that are so critical to the identification and treatment of depression and other mental disorders across the lifespan. The work of these centers will contribute greatly to the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices in clinical settings throughout the country.
Mental Health America sent a letter to Sen. Stabenow supporting this important legislation, which you can read here (PDF).
The Amendment would:
Establishing these centers is especially critical at this time given the strong evidence that economic uncertainty and recession increase the rates of psychiatric symptoms and demand for services.
Contact your Senators and urge them to cosponsor and support the amendment.

Dear [Decision Maker],
I am writing to urge you to cosponsor and support Sen. Debbie Stabenow's amendment to the Senate health reform plan that would establish centers of excellence for the treatment of depression and bipolar disorders. The amendment is based on the Establishing a Network of Health-Advancing National Centers of Excellence for Depression (ENHANCED) Act of 2009 (S. 1857).
Sen. Stabenow's amendment would offer a substantial contribution towards closing the gap between knowledge and practice of effective mental health treatments. I applaud Sen. Stabenow for offering this amendment to establish national centers of excellence for the treatment of depressive and bipolar disorders and urge you to cosponsor this amendment and vote in favor of it.
