Protect Prevention and Public Health Funding—Contact Your Senators Today!

The creation this year of the Prevention and Public Health Fund (Fund) as part of the Affordable Care Act marked an historic investment Congress in much-needed preventive services, community level prevention and public health. The Fund is urgently needed to address the many emerging health threats our country faces and the persistent chronic disease rates that we must begin to control

But this critical funding is in jeopardy even before it has a chance to reach its goal of expanding and sustaining investment in prevention and public health programs to improve health, reduce health disparities, and help restrain the rate of growth in private and public sector health care costs.

Senator Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) has proposed an amendment that would use the Fund as an offset to the pending Small Business Jobs and Credit Act, a bill that Congress will consider when it returns from their recess on September 14.  If passed, the amendment would eliminate the Fund and mark a severe blow to efforts to transform our health system and promote healthier lives.

It is critical that you tell your Senator to protect this investment in public health.

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a behavioral health advocate, I urge you to oppose all attempts to use the Prevention and Public Health Fund (Fund) as an offset, including an amendment from Senator Johanns (R-Neb.) to the Small Business Jobs and Credit Act.

This funding is our only chance to begin to transform our country into one of healthy thriving communities. For too long, we have focused spending on treating people once they are sick rather than preventing illness in the first place. The Fund is urgently needed to address the many emerging health threats our country faces and the persistent chronic disease rates that we must begin to control.

Please oppose any efforts to eliminate the Prevention and Public Health Fund to pay for other programs.

Sincerely,
