Continue the Fight to Protect Medicaid: Contact Congress Today
Earlier this summer, Congress came to an agreement with President Obama that lifted the debt ceiling while protecting Medicaid from immediate cuts. But a so-called “super committee” was created to find $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction over the next 10 years. If they can't, a slew of automatic spending cuts kicks in.
The committee, which has already begun its work, can consider anything that would reduce the deficit, including cutting or totally restructuring Medicaid. All six Republican members of the super committee voted for Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget proposal to slash federal Medicaid spending by $1.4 trillion and turn it into a block grant. As a result, Medicaid—and the crucial mental health services it funds—is vulnerable. And if the panel doesn’t come up with a plan, the automatic cuts would make deep and devastating cuts to discretionary spending, including vital funding for mental health services.
With only two short months before a plan is due to Congress, we have little time to act. Send a strong message to Congress by demanding a deficit plan that protects our most vulnerable citizens.
