Contact Your Senators: Tell Them to Protect the Prevention and Public Health Fund

The Senate is expected to vote on a bill next Tuesday (May 8) that could again target the Prevention and Public Health Fund (Fund) as an offset for extending the current federal student loan rate. The House has already approved legislation that cuts $5.9 billion from the Fund to pay for the extension of the current loan rate.

The Prevention and Public Health Fund is critical to protecting and improving the public's health and shifting our health system from one that focuses on treating the sick to one that focuses on keeping people healthy. Using the fund to pay for student loans threatens $10 million that has been set aside to support programs such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a network of more than 150 crisis centers that provide counseling and mental health referrals 24 hours a day, and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, which provides training and resources. It is wrong to limit efforts that prevent the third leading cause of death among young people.
