“Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.” - Omar Khayyam
Having received my original Uterine Cancer diagnosis in May 2013 and the return of this same cancer in December 2017, I can honestly say a cancer diagnosis puts life in perspective. Yes, the thought of cancer returning is always in the back of a survivor’s mind, but it doesn’t have to control or define us.
When I am tempted to get upset, I work everyday at asking myself, “Will this really matter in 5 years?” “It is okay to say NO?” One BIG thing I have said “yes” to in this past year, is the invitation and training I received to be involved with the “Woman to Woman Program”. This is a new opportunity for women who have had gynecologic cancer to mentor other women who have been recently diagnosed with the same. We converse either on the phone, in person or meet one-on-one to listen, discuss concerns, provide support, hold a hand or dry a tear. This Program allows me to “give back”!
Every 3 months I go to my appointment with my tremendously knowledgeable, kind and understanding Gynecologic Oncologist, Dr. Wilberto Nieves-Neira and his great team! I pray daily, and thank God for this wonderful physician and his cohorts, my husband, Tom, our son, Alex and all of you! I also have the comfort of knowing that I am being treated at a world class institution whose research efforts are foremost along with patient care.
This year the National Cancer Institute (NCI) gave the Lurie Cancer Center an overall “exceptional” rating on a grant award that will provide nearly $31.5 million over 5 years—a dramatic 36% increase over the previous award. These funds will provide essential support for Center’s infrastructure, technology and shared resource and research facilities. Lurie is the founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), an alliance of 28 of the world’s leading cancer centers, devoted to improving the quality and effectiveness of cancer care and part of the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium, a network of academic institutions working together on highly translational clinical trials using the expertise of Big Ten universities. Northwestern and other major academic NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers share their knowledge, compare their findings and work together so that this disease can be eradicated.
