Dear Member of Congress,

On behalf of more than 34 million working people without paid sick days, I urge you to support the Healthy Families Act. This important legislation would guarantee working people the right to earn up to seven paid sick days per year to recover from their own illnesses, care for a sick family member or seek preventive care. More than 40 jurisdictions, including 10 states and the District of Columbia, have taken action to ensure workers have this basic protection, but all workers -- no matter where they live or work -- should have the economic security paid sick days provide.

Working people should not be forced to risk their jobs or financial security to take care of themselves or their families when illness strikes. Yet, nearly one in three private sector workers -- 70 percent of the lowest-wage workers -- cannot earn a single paid sick day to recover from illness or care for a sick child or family member.

That means millions of workers lose pay or even risk losing their jobs simply because they get sick, an ill child needs care or they need to take an elderly parent to a medical appointment. And the consequences can be significant: Just three and a half days missed without pay can deprive an average family without paid sick days of an entire month's grocery budget.

Paid sick days are important to me and the health and well-being of my workplace, my family and my community. That is why I support updating our nation's workplace laws so they reflect the realities of today's working families -- and millions of us are counting on you and your colleagues in Congress to do the same.
