America needs a robust paid leave program!
Dear Member of Congress,
I urge you to watch this video (npwf.info/SupportPaidLeaveVideo) from the National Partnership for Women & Families. It shows just how absurd it is that the United States doesn't have a national paid family and medical leave policy.Eighty-six percent of people working for private companies in the United States do not have access to paid family leave through their jobs. More than 60 percent of workers do not have access to paid personal medical leave through an employer's short-term disability insurance program. And nearly one in four new moms is back at work within two weeks of giving birth. People in just a handful of states -- California, New Jersey, Rhode Island and, soon, New York -- are covered by paid family and medical leave laws, but the rest of us are left on our own. This must change.Please support the kind of affordable, comprehensive national paid leave program the country urgently needs. Specifically, one that:*Is cost effective for workers, employers and the government;*Is accessible to all working people and reflects a modern definition of "family;"*Includes 12 weeks of leave or more;*Covers equally the full range of personal medical and family caregiving needs; and *Guards against retaliation and adverse consequences for taking leave.Don't allow this absurdity to persist. It's past time for a national paid family and medical leave program that works for everyone.
