Congress: Support the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act! Help Stop Pregnancy Discrimination.
Dear Member of Congress,
The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) of 1978 made it illegal to discriminate on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth or pregnancy-related conditions. Yet more than 40 years later, for too many working women being pregnant still means losing a job, being denied a promotion, or not being hired in the first place. Some employers still deny pregnant workers reasonable accommodations they need (such as stools, water bottles, and restroom breaks) to continue working safely during their pregnancies.
That's why we demand Congress support and promptly pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act. This bill would prevent employers from forcing pregnant workers out of their jobs because of medical needs arising out of pregnancy, by requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations. The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act will promote workplace gender equity, healthy pregnancies, and the economic security of pregnant and parenting women and their families.
No one should be forced to choose between a healthy pregnancy and a paycheck. It's time for Congress to recognize the stakes for pregnant workers and their families and pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act without delay.
