Save the Historic Tax Credit
The House tax reform bill eliminates the historic tax credit (HTC) and was just passed out of Ways and Means Committee, while the Senate Finance Committee version retains the HTC but reduces the value of the credit by half and eliminates entirely the 10 percent non-historic tax credit for buildings built before 1936.
We need to act now. Please call your lawmakers TODAY to urge the continuation of the historic tax credit at its existing and undiminished levels. Be sure to log each call so we can keep track of outreach to lawmakers and their response.
It is critical that these messages be constructive and positive. Here are some suggestions:
support for the inclusion of the HTC in the Senate bill and explain why
you value the HTC program.
- Share that
historic rehabilitation projects—typically deemed too risky by conventional
financing—will not get done without it.
- Urge your
lawmakers to vocalize support for the HTC with Congressional leadership
and the tax writing committees immediately and ask that the historic tax
credit be retained in tax reform undiminished.
- Take a moment to say “thank you” and how much you
appreciate them working on your behalf.
