President Trump has just announced his decision to reduce Bears Ears National Monument in southeastern Utah by more than a million acres, leaving thousands of extraordinary archaeological sites vulnerable to looting and vandalism.
The president’s action is unlawful and an affront to the Native Americans who draw deep spiritual significance from the landscape and the millions of visitors who come from across the globe each year to experience Utah’s extraordinary beauty. The National Trust for Historic Preservation intends to challenge this action in court.
As we fight the effort to reduce the monument in court, we are also supporting enhanced protections in Congress. Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) has just introduced a bill to protect the Bears Ears National Monument by expanding the boundaries to 1.9 million acres, as originally recommended by a coalition of five tribes that proposed the Bears Ears National Monument designation to the Obama administration.
