Tell DeVos and Sessions That They Must Enforce the Title IX Rights of Trans Students

The federal government has a responsibility to ensure students can learn free from gender-based discrimination. By rescinding the guidelines that told schools how to follow the law, Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and Attorney General Jeff Sessions are failing to live up that responsibility.

Even without these specific guidelines in place, Title IX still protects transgender students—and schools should live up to their obligations under the law. DeVos and Sessions are responsible for ensuring that happens.

Many legislators require the 'title' field to be filled in but only accept a predetermined list of options. The National Women's Law Center understands that these options do not represent all gender identities.

Dear Secretary DeVos and Attorney General Sessions,

We all have a part to play in creating safe, healthy schools for all students. As Secretary of Education and Attorney General, you both have a responsibility to respect and enforce students' right to an education free from sex discrimination, as guaranteed by the federal civil rights law Title IX. That law requires schools to respect the identities of transgender students.
