Tell Your Senators: Block Devastating Program Cuts

Republicans in the House told us exactly what they think about programs that help millions of women and their families: they voted to cut them to the bone. Their spending plan for the rest of 2011 is as irresponsible as it is dangerous, stripping tens of billions of dollars from services that women depend on and prohibiting the federal government from implementing legal protections vital to women.

The House passed the Continuing Resolution (H.R. 1) with amendments that made an already terrible bill even worse. The legislation headed to the Senate would:

  • Defund implementation of the landmark health care law, threatening to halt hard-won consumer protections that, among many things, will stop insurance companies from treating women like a pre-existing condition.
  • Eliminate the Title X Family Planning Program that provides contraceptives and other preventive care to five million people each year. Piling on the injury, the House even removed ALL federal funding from Planned Parenthood.
  • Strip over $1 billion from Head Start and child care assistance, which keeps children learning and women earning, leaving 368,000 children without early learning support.
  • Slash funding for Pell grants, essential to helping low-income people afford college, amounting to a loss of more than $800 per student. It also eliminates the Women’s Educational Equity program, which helps schools comply with Title IX, the law that prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded education programs. Plus, it blocks the Department of Education from implementing regulations intended to ensure that for-profit colleges provide quality education and do not prey on vulnerable students for their financial aid dollars.

In addition, H.R. 1 cuts funding for prenatal care and maternal and child health, education, job training, community health services, assistance for the elderly, Social Security offices, housing, food safety, environmental protection, and more. Yet the savings that would be achieved by gutting these core programs are less than half the cost of the two-year extension of tax breaks that benefit only the wealthiest Americans.

We're at the beginning of a sustained campaign to protect the most basic and essential programs for women and their families. We know you'll be with us along the way. Take action today and tell your Senators to block these devastating cuts.
