MeatUrge Government: Stop Industry from Skewing Science

Please help us stop industry from influencing what foods the government recommends in the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Our nation's health depends on it.

Last week, doctors and dietitians with the Physicians Committee testified to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services to support recommendations made by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. In its scientific report, the committee urged the government to focus the 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans on plant-based dietary patterns that very clearly limit meat.

At the hearing, statements from the National Dairy Council, the North American Meat Institute, the Sugar Association, the United Egg Producers, and other industry groups tried to skew science.

Overall, we were appalled that nearly half of the speakers had clear industry ties and stand to profit by having their products included in the guidelines. One by one, they stood up to deliver their sales pitches: Meat for iron, milk for calcium, eggs for protein, and candy for an occasional treat, they said.

But the science does not back up their statements.

Don't let industry groups dictate the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Sign our petition today.
