Last week, the House Agriculture Committee voted to end
“direct payments” as part of the 2012 Farm Bill. For the past several years, we
have been working to end these wasteful subsidies, which overwhelmingly favor
meat and dairy production. These payments are pure handouts to the producers of
meat and dairy. They are based on historical land usage, so farmers don’t even
have to grow crops to receive the payment. In fact, if they want to grow fruits
or vegetables on their lands, they lose the direct payment.
The good news is that our voices have been heard on this
issue—there will be no more direct payments. Thank you for your work over the
years to end this wasteful hand-out favoring the production of unhealthy foods.
But in Washington, DC, there is no such thing as a
clean victory. Powerful meat and dairy producers were able to negotiate the
creation of two new forms of crop insurance to take the place of direct
