Support the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act

It’s time to stop the nontherapuetic use of antibiotics on factory farms. Ask your members of Congress to become co-sponsors of the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act.

Please take a minute to let your members of Congress know that you support the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act, and ask them to become co-sponsors of the bill. We have provided text for you, but if you decide to write your own message, please be polite and encouraging. Here are some talking points:

  • Please sign on as a co-sponsor of the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (H.R. 1150), a bill that will protect human health by limiting the use of antibiotics in livestock.
  • Currently, 80 percent of all antibiotics sold in the United States each year are consumed by animals, with 70 percent administered to healthy animals through routine feed.
  • This irresponsible use of antibiotics generates antibiotic-resistant bacteria which are largely untreatable and very dangerous to humans.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 2 million people contract resistant infections annually and, of those, 90,000 die. The Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences has estimated that the annual cost of treating antibiotic-resistant infections in the United States is $30 billion.
  • Please co-sponsor the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act today to help end the antibiotic-resistant infections epidemic.
