Dear [Decision Maker],
Thank you for being an unwavering champion of girls worldwide. We know that you stand with the US Senate, G8 leaders, and The Elders in recognizing that child marriage is a serious human rights violation. Every 3 seconds, a girl under age 18 becomes a child bride, with more than 60 million girls around the world today having been married before the age of 18. Preventing child marriage will help us to fulfill important development goals: It will improve maternal and child health, since girls under age 15 are five times more likely to die in childbirth than women in their 20s. Currently, half of all girls living in the developing world will become a mother before turning 18. Girls are more likely to become infected with HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Preventing child marriage empowers women and girls, helps keep girls in school, and improves economic opportunities. If we don't take action now, 100 million more girls in developing countries will be married within the next decade. In Yemen, where Pathfinder International works, one in seven girls marries by age 14 and nearly half by age 17. Organizations like Pathfinder International believe that, in order to empower girls and women, it is critical to prevent early marriage and childbirth and to keep girls in school.
