Perkins continues to lobby in favor of the CRPD, an international treaty designed to improve the lives and protect the rights of the world’s estimated 1 billion people with disabilities.

We need your help! Please urge your senators to support the CRPD.

To date 140 countries and the European Union have ratified what is formally known as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. That group does not include the United States – a fact Perkins and hundreds of organizations across the country are determined to change.

Why the CRPD matters:

  • It improves accessibility and limits discrimination against people with disabilities
  • It's a critical tool for creating policies all over the world
  • It's modeled after the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Alone it does not create any laws, but it provides a universal framework to do so
  • Without U.S. ratification, U.S. leadership is absent from the CRPD and its committee of experts

More CRPD Treaty Facts:

  • It's supported by 800+ organizations including U.S. disability, civil rights, and veterans groups
  • It has overwhelming bipartisan support in the U.S. Senate
  • 57.8 million Americans have one or more disabilities
  • 1 billion people around the world have disabilities

The U.S. Senate came within five votes of ratifying the CRPD in late 2012. In 2013 efforts to bring the treaty to a second vote stalled in December. That's why we need you to take action today!

Show your senators that support for the CRPD remains strong.

We encourage you to send the letter below expressing your support for the CRPD.

Please send this message to your Senators

Dear [Decision Maker],

I write to express my support for the U.S. ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

I am calling on you to publicly confirm your support for ratifying the CRPD and encourage your colleagues on the Foreign Relations Committee to do the same. It's time the United States affirms that we as a country embrace the rights and dignity of all people with disabilities.

Sincerely,
