Your Support Makes Our Voices Heard

Parkinson Canada SuperWalk is YOUR opportunity to change the course of Parkinson’s in Canada. Through SuperWalk, you directly support a better life today for Canadians living with Parkinson’s; a world without Parkinson’s tomorrow.

Supporting Advocacy plays a major role in a "better life today".

We are the national authority speaking on issues that impact the Parkinson community. There are over 150 Parkinson’s Ambassadors in communities across Canada making our voice heard on important issues every day.

With the support of our ambassador network, our Public Affairs team leads advocacy initiatives including reduced wait times, access to medications and much more on a provincial, federal and local basis.

This includes working directly with provincial, federal and local government to share concerns felt in communities across the country around access to trained Parkinson specialists and to help set the healthcare policy across the country.

We are focused on priorities for Canadians living with Parkinson's, including addressing these significant issues as part of a Plan for Parkinson's:

  • The average wait time to see a specialist for diagnosis of Parkinson’s in Canada is 11 months and in some regions the wait is 2+ years
  • 20 percent of Canadians with Parkinson's report lack of access to specialists as a barrier to receiving the care they need
  • Parkinson’s has one of the highest direct healthcare costs annually of any neurological disease ($1.21 Billion) with significant personal expenses for those impacted. We aim to ensure Parkinson’s treatments and therapies are affordable and available.
  • Increasing the skilled Parkinson’s workforce to promote early diagnosis and improve access to specialized multidisciplinary care
  • Increasing access to evidence-based community programs that improve quality of life

Some of the most important recent government initiatives resulting from our advocacy work include:

  • In 2017 Apomorphine (MOVAPO) received a positive recommendation by the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health. Parkinson Canada filed a patient evidence submission for the review process that was informed by a survey from nearly 900 people with Parkinson’s and caregivers
  • As a result of strong social action the Public Health Agency Surveillence System added Parkinson’s disease to the Canadian Chronic Disease Surveillance System. This means the incidence of the disease will be tracked year over year which is critical information to gather in order to ensure government investments keep pace with the growing needs of Parkinson’s patients
