Sample Call Script:

I am calling to urge you to oppose HF 561.  This bill would increase my electricity rates for risky new reactor projects that may never get built.  Reactor projects throughout the country have been abandoned or delayed, because new reactors can’t compete against the cheaper alternatives. Cost estimates for large new reactors have quadrupled in the past 10 years, while the cost of alternatives continues to decrease. The economics of small reactors are no better.

We should learn the lesson from states that have implemented such cost recovery laws.  In Florida, ratepayers are paying today for new large reactors that won’t be built until after 2020 – if ever.

Iowa has better energy options.  I should not be forced to take on the risk of building these risky, first-of-a-kind reactors with an interest-free loan to MidAmerican.  I urge you to vote against HF 561.
