(download the full statement and FAQ here)

Whereas in July of 2017, 122 nations completed negotiations at the United Nations and adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, calling for the elimination of all nuclear weapons.

Whereas this December 10th the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons.

We call on the United States to lead a global effort to prevent nuclear war by:

  • renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first
  • ending the president’s sole, unchecked authority to launch a nuclear attack
  • taking US nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert
  • cancelling the plan to replace its entire arsenal with enhanced weapons
  • actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals
