Not since 1953 have we been so close to the brink of a global catastrophe, according the Bulletin of Atomic nuclear siloScientists Doomsday Clock.

Now once again, it is with extreme urgency that we must act to pull ourselves back from the brink.

Maine’s health professionals and faith and religious leaders are finding common ground when it comes to the humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons.

When it comes to nuclear war, we are united in our values in seeking a world free of nuclear weapons and the threat of catastrophic humanitarian destruction that they represent.

In October 2017, CNN released a poll from SSRS that shows a growing concern about the way the Trump Administration is handling the situation with North Korea. The poll also shows that 86% of Americans see North Korea as a serious threat.

The intersection of faith and science becomes an important place of strength to urge our policy makers and the US to find a better way forward through diplomacy and out of a trajectory toward nuclear conflict.


Back from the Brink: A Call to Prevent Nuclear War

Whereas in July of 2017, 122 nations completed negotiations at the United Nations and adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, calling for the elimination of all nuclear weapons.

Whereas this December 10th the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons.

We call on the United States to lead a global effort to prevent nuclear war by: 

  • renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first
  • ending the president’s sole, unchecked authority to launch a nuclear attack
  • taking US nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert
  • cancelling the plan to replace its entire arsenal with enhanced weapons
  • actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals
