Hey everyone! Thanks for visiting my personal page for my last year in PUDM!
PUDM is a yearlong movement on Purdue's campus to put an end to childhood illness. We work throughout the year planning, fundraising, and recruiting others to join our cause. All this leads up to an 18 hour, no sitting, no sleeping "Dance Marathon." In 2018, PUDM raised a record $1,207,476.23, all for Riley Hospital for Children. Of that, the first $100,000 went to supporting Child Life, which is the program that helps make kids and their siblings feel comfortable in the hospital. Riley provides all of their patients with things like art theorapy, music therapy, games, and more. Child Life specialists even use dolls and toys to show the kids what theyre procedures are going to be like. All this makes the hospital a much less scary experience, and, thanks to us, no parent ever sees a bill for this special treatment.
The rest of our fundraising goes towards pediatric cancer research at the Herman B Wells Center. This supports cutting edge research, which is shared not only nationwide, but with other researchers around the world. PUDM is the largest annual donor to pediatric cancer research at Riley Hospital for Children. Some things that I didn't know prior to doing PUDM are:
- Only 4% of funding for cancer research goes towards pediatric cancers
- Federal funding is awarded on a 12-1 ratio to what a hospital fundraises themselves. This means that for every $1 PUDM raises, the federal government will match it with $12
- Approximately 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cancer before their 20th birthday
- 15,780 kids will be diagnosed with cancer this year alone
Here's how you can make a difference:
Just click on the "Donate Now" button to make a donation. Every little bit helps, and no donation is too small. Then, please pass this on to anyone else who you think may want to help this cause. I'm really happy with all the support I have received so far in trying to help kids at Riley Hospital for Children, so thank you so much for helping!
Why I Do PUDM
I'm involved in PUDM for the people. For the friends I've made at Purdue through PUDM. For the Riley families and kids I get to meet from all over Indiana. For all the kids across the nation and world that are fighting a childhood illness. The incredible people I've gotten to meet through PUDM are the reason I put so much time and effort into this organization. I have been involved with PUDM since my freshman year at Purdue, and for my last marathon this year I am so humbled and honored to serve as the Riley Relations Executive! This means I help develop meaningful relationships between Riley families and PUDM members that will last a lifetime. I spend my time planning events for Riley families, leading my amazing committee of over 70 Purdue students, and supporting and loving all of our Riley Families. These families have given me so much hope and passion for fighting childhood illnesses, and this is why I love spending my time helping Riley Hospital for Children in any way I can!
