Support HB 1059

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am your constituent and am writing to ask for your support of a bill that will help the many Indianans who are struggling to build their families in our state.

One in 8 couples in the U.S. has trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy -- that's more than 140,000 Indianans. Infertility affects men and women equally and does not discriminate. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the World Health Organization recognize infertility as a disease. As such, infertility should be covered by health insurance like other diseases.

Cost is the number one barrier to seeking family building assistance. Indiana should join the growing number of states that require infertility insurance coverage. HB 1059 requires insurance coverage for in vitro fertilization (IVF), which is considered the standard of care for many persons seeking treatment for infertility. For many patients, IVF increases the chance of singleton births. A reduction in multiple births decreases health care and other costs and can result in healthier babies. In fact, in states that require coverage for IVF, the rate of multiple births decreased significantly. And in states that require coverage for infertility, including IVF, insurance premiums increased only slightly.

I hope you will support this pro-family bill on behalf of the 1 in 8 couples in your district who are struggling to build their families.
