Oppose Anti-Family Bill

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am your constituent and an advocate for RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. Since 1974, RESOLVE has represented the millions of American women and men struggling with infertility, including more than 100,000 South Carolina citizens suffering from this disease.

I write today to urge you to oppose SB 485/HB 3920 - an amendment to South Carolina Statutory Code where the General Assembly "finds that a human being is a person at fertilization," and therefore "right to life for each born and preborn human being vests at fertilization."

If passed, SB 485/HB 3920 would impair the practice of in vitro fertilization (IVF), the standard of care for couples struggling with infertility. By legally recognizing fertilized eggs/embryos as "preborn human beings," it leaves the door open to drastically expand the definition of putting fertilized eggs/embryos "at risk," and potentially prevents doctors from performing this medically recognized procedure. This would unfairly burden individuals who simply want to experience the joy of having children. And cancer patients whose only hope lies in freezing embryos could be prevented from having biological children.

One in eight American couples has trouble getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy. For them, IVF is often the best pathway to a family. Infertility cuts across all socioeconomic levels, and all racial, ethnic and religious lines. Medical conditions such as endometriosis, ovulation disorders, luteal phase defect, premature ovarian failure and male factor are the primary causes of infertility. The American Medical Association, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and the World Health Organization (WHO) all recognize infertility as a disease.

For over 40 years, RESOLVE has been providing support, information, and advocacy for the infertility community. On behalf of my family, and all South Carolina couples struggling to build their families, I respectfully ask that you oppose SB 485/HB 3920.

I greatly appreciate your time and consideration and am happy to provide you any additional information on this issue. Much more about infertility can be found at
