As the largest and only DC-based trot in the region, SOME’s Trot for Hunger brings together over 8,000 members of the DMV community at Freedom Plaza on Thanksgiving morning to give back and show what community and compassion is all about.

The Route

Our little turkey 1-miler and the full 5k each begin at Freedom Plaza (on the corner of 13th Street, NW and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW). The route runs along Pennsylvania Avenue and is an official 5k course and is timed and certified by USATF (view the route & certification here). Our event is timed in partnership with Pacers Running.

The race concludes with a family-friendly festival on Freedom Plaza that includes music, games, live entertainment, and more!

Race Morning Schedule

While our exact timing is subject to change to keep our community safe, we are excited to return to Freedom Plaza & Pennsylvania Avenue. Final details will be shared with all registered participants, but approximate day of timing is:

Registration begins at 7am | Little Turkey 1 Miler at 8:30am | 5k begins at 9:00am *(schedule subject to slight changes to allow for greater physical distancing and COVID-19 safety)

For those racing with us virtually, you can run/walk/log your time at any time during the month of November!

Registration Info

Registration can be completed directly on this website. You will have the opportunity to register as an individual or form a team. During the registration you will choose whether you would like to race in person or will participate virtually. We encourage you to form a team and have all racers, friends, and family who would like to participate join that team to showcase your collective fundraising impact!

Virtual Trot Options

We understand that not everyone may feel comfortable or be available to participate in our outdoor 5k. Built on the success of our 2020 virtual event, we will again offer the opportunity for virtual racing. Each registered virtual participant will receive an official race shirt (this will arrive after the event) and other fun race information. You will also have the ability to fundraise, form a team, and share more about SOME's mission.

Please note: We encourage all virtual 5k participants to run their own race in a local park, your neighborhood, or anywhere you'd like! You will have the opportunity to submit your time, although virtual race times will not be considered for overall and age group race winning prizes.

Getting to Freedom Plaza

Parking meters in downtown DC are not enforced on Thanksgiving day so street parking is free. There are parking garages that offer paid parking. The race is also accessible by Metro, which opens at 8:00 am on race day with three stations located near Freedom Plaza: Federal Triangle (Blue, Orange & Silver lines), Metro Center (Blue, Orange, Red, & Silver lines), and Archives Navy Memorial - Penn Quarter (Green and Yellow lines).

COVID-19 Information

SOME's Trot For Hunger is currently planning on having an in-person 20th Annual race. However, there is a possibility that some restrictions on runner capacity, social distancing measures and mask use may be in place in November due to COVID-19.

Based on possible social distancing requirements, it may be necessary to create a staggered start line or variable timing to allow social distancing for runners. Mask use may be required for runners at the start line, on the race course and while in the post-race finish area. Our post-race refreshments and food may look different this year also due to COVID-19 restrictions.

We do have a virtual option that is available for all participants. If you feel uncomfortable running in person this year, we can switch your registration to the virtual option.

We will continue to monitor COVID-19 guidelines and trends to maintain a safe experience for all race attendees and the community. We will communicate any necessary changes to all participants as they become necessary.

Please note: During registration, all participants acknowledge that they will adhere to all federal, state, local, and SOME guidelines as they relate to COVID-19 safety protocols, social distancing, mask-wearing, and any other measures deemed necessary for the safety of our community. All participants acknowledge that they will follow guidelines as communicated via email, signage, PA announcements, and instructions by SOME staff and/or volunteers.
