Frequently Asked Questions

Is the event virtual or in-person? What is a virtual 5K?

The short answer: it's both! SOME's Trot for Hunger is currently planning for an in-person 20th Annual Race! While the event may look slightly different and modifications might be necessary, we are excited to bring our community together for such an important cause. To ensure that all are able to participate, we will also offer a virtual 5k that can be completed anytime and anywhere; registration for the virtual or in-person race are both conducted on this website. The goal of participating virtually or with us in person remains the same: to create awareness and raise funds to help benefit those in need by providing much-needed food, housing, access to healthcare, employment training, and long-term comprehensive addiction treatment programs. We encourage you to join us in-person or virtually for this mission!

When & where is the race?

The in-person Trot for Hunger occurs on Thanksgiving morning - this year, it will be held on Thursday, November 25th starting at Freedom Plaza. Registration that morning begins at 7a.m., the Little Turkey 1-Miler begins at 8:30am, and the 5K will begin around 9am for timed runners, and around 9:15 for untimed runners & walkers. Please understand that slight adjustments may be necessary to maintain adequate social distancing for our participants. We anticipate the race and festivities will end around 11/11:30a.m. - giving you more than enough time to enjoy turkey at home (but bring the whole family to the Trot!). If you are participating in the virtual race, you may run or walk safely in your neighborhood anytime during the month of November! How to log your time, access your digital race bib, and more instructions will be sent directly to registered virtual participants

Can the whole family participate?

Yes! Our entire race is family-friendly and we want everyone to participate! (Costumes, team spirit, and bringing the whole family is definitely encouraged!) The Trot kicks off with a Little Turkey 1-Miler for participants 10 and under (there is also a reduced participation fee for this option), before moving to both timed and untimed options for the full 5K. There will be a staggered start area for those who are either running, jogging, or just walking the route. The event concludes with a festival-like environment, with live entertainment, refreshments, and fun for the whole family!

What is the "Little Turkey 1-Miler"? Is this for kids? Can I run/walk with them?

The Little Turkey 1-Miler is a 1 mile total out and back race for younger participants 10 and under. Registration for this age group is only $30, and this year also includes an event shirt! Parents/guardians are welcome to join their children for this shorter race - we just ask that the adult is also registered for the full 5K for safety and waiver reasons. The full 5K takes place at the conclusion of the Little Turkey race.

What about strollers?

Yes, strollers are more than welcome, we want the whole family to participate! We’d simply ask that you consider starting towards the back of your starting group, just to avoid back-ups or anyone having to navigate around you. If you are running a timed race, our timing software will not start your time until you first cross the starting line, so where you start in your group will have no impact on your final time.

Are our pets & furry family members welcome?

Yes, pets are welcome! However, all pets must remain on leash throughout the event. Also, participants with pets are not allowed to line up alongside runners. You will be asked to start towards the back of your starting group, to avoid back-ups or any being tripped or delayed by a leash. If running a timed race, our timing software will not start your time until you cross the starting line, so where you start in your group will have no impact on your final time!

Is the course handicap accessible?

Yes! We encourage all who would like to participant in this family-friendly event to register and attend!

Do participants wear costumes?

Yes! Since this is a turkey trot, we encourage our participants to dress up and show team spirit! The event is meant to be fun, so we hope you will bring the energy! However, we encourage our participants to think critically about what costumes they choose to wear or and do not permit dressing in a way that may be offensive to others. For example, wearing face paint, head dresses, or feathers, have distinct meanings for Native American tribes and nations.

What time should we arrive for the race?

We recommend that participants arrive as early as possible as lines to pick up registration materials can get quite long! We also want to ensure that we have adequate spacing and physical distancing. We suggest giving yourself at least an hour before the race start as we are expecting 8,000+ participants. Registration will open at 7a.m. on race morning.

How do I get there? Where is the nearest Metro?

The walk and run will begin and end on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW between 13th Street, NW and 12th Street, NW. We recommend using Freedom Plaza as your point of interest when looking up directions. Please allow enough time to pick up your race packet and to get to the line-up area prior to the 9:00 am start time (earlier for the Little Turkey 1-Miler). Parking meters in downtown DC are not enforced on Thanksgiving day so street parking is free. There are parking garages that offer paid parking. The race is also accessible by Metro, which opens at 8:00 am on race day with three stations located near Freedom Plaza: Federal Triangle (Blue, Orange & Silver lines), Metro Center (Blue, Orange, Red, & Silver lines), and Archives Navy Memorial - Penn Quarter (Green and Yellow lines). Factor in enough time for the train, plus check-in or warm-up.

Is the race course certified? Is the race timed? Will results be posted?

Yes. The course is USATF certified course, #DC14011RT. During registration, you will have the option to select whether you would like to be officially timed or are running for fun with friends and family. Official race results will be posted after the Trot. Those who run untimed and the Little Turkey 1-Miler will not receive an official time, although there will be a course timer. If running virtually, you will receive detailed instructions on how to submit your race time, download your race bib, and receive your shirt.

Is there a place to store items at the race?

Due to COVID-19 safety procedures, we are limiting the exchange of items between participants, volunteers, and staff. To protect our community, bag check or storage as we have conducted in previous years will NOT be available. We encourage participants to think critically about what items they will need at the Trot and leave extra items at home, in your car, or with a family member or friend. An extremely limited storage area will be available, but SOME and our staff and volunteers are not responsible for any lost, missing, or stolen items.

What COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place?

SOME's Trot For Hunger is currently planning on having an in-person 20th Annual race. However, there is a possibility that some restrictions on runner capacity, physical distancing measures and mask use may be in place in November due to COVID-19. Based on possible physical distancing requirements, it may be necessary to create a staggered start line or variable timing to allow social distancing for runners. Mask use may also be required for runners at the start line, on the race course and while in the post-race finish area. Our post-race refreshments and food may also look different this year. We do have a virtual option that is available for all participants. If you feel uncomfortable running in person this year, we can switch your registration to the virtual option. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 guidelines and trends to maintain a safe experience for all race attendees and the community. We will communicate any necessary changes to all participants as they become necessary.

Where are packet pickups and when?

Packet pickup information will be communicated to all registered participants closer to the event date. It will also be posted on this webpage under the race information, packet pickup section. If you are picking up for more than yourself, please bring a written or typed list of the names, and t-shirt sizes

Are group discounts or sponsorships available?

Yes! If you have more than 10 runners, or are interested in sponsorship opportunities, please email so we can setup a time to discuss further!

What do I wear? Do I get a shirt?

All registered participants receive a custom event t-shirt (and other fun event swag) - sizes are guaranteed for those who check-in and participate in packet pickup leading up to the event. While you are welcome to wear your event shirt for the race, there are many racers and family members who come in costumes and turkey-approved, family friendly attire! Have fun with your outfit (but do please keep it family friendly!). For those participating virtually, you will receive an event t-shirt after the conclusion of the in-person event.

Where does my registration fee go? Who does the Trot for Hunger support?

The Trot for Hunger 5K directly supports SOME (So Others Might Eat). The Trot is the largest community event to support this mission, and raises essential funds and awareness to combat poverty in the Washington metropolitan area. Registration fees cover participation costs, race course setup frees, event shirt, and also include a small deductible donation to SOME (exact details will be located on your emailed receipt). All fundraising efforts and donations are 100% tax-deductible. Proceeds from the 5K benefit thousands of homeless families, single adults, the elderly, veterans, and people suffering from mental health concerns, by providing much-needed food, clothing, access to healthcare, employment training, and long-term comprehensive addiction treatment programs. You can learn more about SOME and our mission here.
