I had symptoms of Sjogren’s for years without any medical provider acknowledging this diagnosis. In fact, as a Black woman, I was told by several doctors that I could not possibly have Sjogren’s because of my race. Other doctors refused to acknowledge that only 70% of patients are diagnosed with a special lab test. Because I fell in the 30% who tested negative on this lab test despite having most of the common symptoms of Sjogren’s, I was never treated and this diagnosis was never noted in my medical chart. I also have primary family member medical history which could be associated with Sjögren’s (Waldstrom’s Macroglobulinemia and Lupus) but this was also ignored.
