New Resources from CFPB on Helping Caregivers Spot Illegal Nursing Home Debt Collection Practices; Register for the Webinar Thursday on the Topic

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has published a blog post and new resource on helping caregivers spot illegal nursing home debt collection tactics.  The materials include tips for spotting red flags in nursing home admissions contracts; finding help if a debt collector tries to collect nursing home bills from caregivers; and reporting illegal activities to federal and state authorities.  The materials can help empower caregivers and others, like long-term care ombudsmen, care coordinators, elder law attorneys, and other aging services provicders, to play a part in protecting caregivers.

Join us this Thursday, December 15th at 3:00pm ET for a webinar with CFPB and a special guest from the National Consumer Law Center.  The webinar will address illegal debt collection practices by nursing homes, it will discuss resident and family rights during the admisssions process, and it will offer strategies for assisting residents and families.

Urge Congress to Stand with Nursing Home Residents

On December 6th, Consumer Voice and other advocates sent a letter to Congress asking them to include critical nursing home provisions in an end of year appropriations bill. These provisions would further the ambitious and historic nursing home reforms announced by President Biden in February 2022. President Biden’s reforms focused on care quality, particularly staffing, enforcement and accountability, and transparency in how nursing homes spend tax dollars.

Contact your members of Congress today and tell them to stand with nursing home residents and include these important provisions. Thank you to those who have already taken action!
